What a lovely day! We went on a Barossa Valley wine tour and tasted a multitude of various wines. My idea of heaven.
The drive was along very windy (ie bendy) roads and the countryside was rolling hills with many vineyards. They often grow the vines 'dry' here which means they water the vinesfor the first few years until the roots get very long and then they are left to themselves. A wine can't claim to come from the Barossa Valley unless it is produced from 80% grapes from that area. I'm afraid that Jacob's Creek wine does not come into thiscategory and is viewed by Australians like Fosters beer is!! We did cross Jacob's Creek but blink and you miss it!
We started off at Chateau Yaldarra where McGuigans wine is produced. We tasted whites and reds and port as well. I actually preferred the most expensive of course!
We had a coffee break un Tanunda, a town at the heart of the Barossa and then onto the Peter Lehmann winery. After tasting the wines here we had a lovely lunch and then strolled to the small Langmeil winery which is home to the oldest known Shiraz vineyard in the world.
We then continue to the Mengler's Hill lookout where we saw panoramic views over the valley.
Our last winery was the Murray Street vineyard, a very small concern.
Our tour guide was brilliant, informative, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humour! I am now going to bed as after all that wine I am feeling a little sleepy and tomorrow we set off for Melbourne.
