So i drove like a maniac away from Wellington in tears and more hungover than i thought possible. It was very rainy and i was very poorly. I got a bit lost but finally managed to find Cameron's house where i had arranged to wwoof for a few days.
He runs Timeless Horse Treks beneath the Tararua wind farm and has 20 horses including 5 Clydesdales. He really is a legend in my eyes. A cabinet maker by trade he taught himself to ride at 20, built a gypsy caravan, bought some Clydies and hit the road, spending years as a traveller before buying his house. His family have been in the region since 1890 and really are people of the land.
He shoes his horses himself and runs wagon adventures and treks. And his mum is called Audrey Horne - how cool is that!? His house a bit unusual and wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea - outside loo and no heating. The bath was also outside in the bush and full of rainwater that we heated with a fire underneath. It's pretty much a Withnail flavoured sort of domesticity but having lived with Pop for a while it's nothing i couldn't handle!! Oh and there were mice all over the place.
But i had such a fantastic time. We made lots of firewood, i did some gardening, drove a very old tractor for miles, towed a vehicle and rode horses! wohoo! what a life. It's hard to explain the basicness of the lifestyle but i felt right at home. Didn't get chance to take many pictures but they give the general idea.
Thanks for everything Cameron - sorry i drank all your whisky!
