Jo's Travels
Floating mountains, mirages, geysers...
Now in Santiago. Travelled down through Bolivia - 4WD through some fantasitc places. Went through the world's largest salt plain. An amazing spectacle. Because it is the rainy season the salt plains are covered by a thin 'film' of water which provides perfect reflections. So perfect you cant tell where the sky begins...mountains appear to be floating in the sky and we felt like we were flying not driving! Check out the photos! On day 2 and 3 we drove through the Atacama desert, the driest place on Earth. Amazing rock formations and then the earth became more and more barren...and then not a plant for hundreds of miles. Lots of mirages too. Very colourful earth and some great geysers and the geologist in me got quite excited.
First stop in Chile was San Pedro de Atacama. Very chilled place just across the border. Border crossing a bit of a nightmare. Didnt realise it but Bolivia have a bit of a Foot and Mouth problem (how careless...would never happen in England..) so we had to get off bus and tread through disinfectant and then rummage through our rucksacks so they could disinfect our other shoes. So my bras and knickers decide to fall out all over the floor.
Next stop Calama. It has never rained here! But a godforsaken place. Dont go there. Nowhere to eat! We couldnt get out of there fast enough and then headed for La Serena on the coast. Nice and sunny. Best bit was very very handsome guy working in my hotel. He was also very good at table tennis as he managed to beat me. He wanted to take me dancng on Friday night but alas, I had to go to Santiago:(
