Jono's Travels
This morning it was still raining, this meant that anyone who had booked skydiving couldn't go, glad I ended up on deciding not to skydive after all, but it did mean that today's trip on the Jungfraubahn railway to the top of Jungfrau Mountain wouldn't be as pretty as we had hoped. After breakfast we grabbed our packed lunch and made our way to the station. Upon arriving we were given instructions on which trains to catch and told to be on time, cause if we weren't the train would leave without us. We caught the train and along the way looked at the wet, but still fantastic scenery of misty mountains and waterfalls. While it wasn't the scenic jaw dropping views we had hoped for it was still pretty amazing to look at. It was mentioned a few times how awesome it would be to live in the houses in that area and to be able to wake up and look out at those mountains. After about 2:30 hours and a couple of train switches, we finally arrived at The Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. The Jungfraujoch which opened to tourists in 1912 is the highest railway station in Europe and is located 3,454 metres above sea level. To reach the top we found ourselves being taken by the train though a series of tunnels carved into the cliffs of the mountain range. I would hate to think how hard it would have been to make those tunnels at that altitude. Due to the high altitude, you can suffer from altitude sickness, something I'm familiar with from my trip to Peru last year and I recognised the symptoms before we even got to the top. Unfortunately a number of the others were feeling sick too and they headed back to the hostel almost as soon as we got to the top, it's a pity as there was a bit to look at, despite not having much of a view out the window up the top. Looking around The Jungfraujoch, they had a number restaurants, of which had some of the highest prices I had seen ever for some items, an example, a 600ml bottle of Coke 5.90 Swiss franks (about NZ$8.90). As well as the restaurants they also had a chocolate shop which was entertaining to see the Asian tourists just filling their bags with different varieties of chocolate, they must have cost a fortune. There were a few walkways to different places with some things along the way, like a giant snow globe, it didn't exactly have snow in it, but did mechanically have moving parts in it, and it would move to a sound track and they would project light onto it to simulate the snow, it looked pretty cool. We made our way to an indoor Ice Palace, which apart from the railing to help you get around, was completely ice... Including the floor. If you got your shuffle on right, you could find yourself moving around that place with no troubles. There were a bunch of ice carvings there which I took some photos of, we even finally found where Skrat from Ice Age finally ended up... Stuck in the side of the wall of the Ice Palace. As some of the Aussies hadn't seen snow yet, It was time to go out for a little play, making our way to the Sphinx Observatory, at an altitude of 3571 meters which was really the only spot which had a big enough area which we could all go out in without being completely blown away. Out to the snow we want for a quick photo of us and then it was time for a quick snowball fight, Imogen somehow managed to snowball every one of our faces while Olivia broke out the snow angel. She seemed to have done it before, turns out she had been training with Sand Angels for years, working up for the day she met snow for the first time. A few snowballs in and our fingers were freezing cold, I couldn't even feel may hands, not surprising at -6 degrees. We got inside and started to warm up again and made our way downstairs to take a look though the souvenir shop and purchasing the some merchandise, after which we chowed down on our packed lunches. By this stage it was time to make our way back to Interlaken, so it was back onto the train and down the hill we went. By this stage the wether had started to improve and we were able to get some better photos, although in order to do this we needed to open the window on the train so we didn't have the rain drops visible in the photos. This did cause a little bit of conflict with some people complaining about the Windows being down making it cold, but hey, they were just dealing with minus 6 degrees at the top, and the train wasn't that cold at all, the just need to wait a few moments. After our 2:30 hour trip back to Interlaken, it was off to the supermarket for a quick shop before making our way to the Balmer's hostel. The thought of jumping into the hot tub sounded like a brilliant idea, unfortunately once we got back we found it was being used, so for some of us, we decided to have a few drinks downstairs with a small cheese board that was purchased at the supermarket, while others took off to the Irish pub down the road for happy hour. Fabian had purchased a bottle of red Swiss wine, thinking we would need a bottle opener for the cork one of the other guys took off to grab an opener, only for Fabian to find that while it wasn't a twist top, it wasn't a cork either, well not in the sense that it was made from cork, but instead it was made from glass. None of us had seen one like it before, I think Fabian will be keeping that. By the time we had finished the wine, the hot tub had become free, I headed down to the Irish pub to let the girls know and instead, ended up staying for a couple of beers before making our way back for dinner. Chicken and pasta were on the menu tonight, followed by custard and strudel. It like they made this meal especially for me... Yum yum yum. We finished up dinner and while some of us went and played pool, others that had missed the hot tub opportunity from earlier so attempted to have another go at getting in again, only to find that once again, it was full. After about 20 minutes the occupants of the hot tub finally left and we had about 30 minutes to enjoy each other's company and overlook the snow covered mountains. While some then headed off to bed after the spa, others went down stairs to the club to enjoy a drink or two before making or way to bed as well, for me, it was two drinks and then off to my room for what I intended to be my chance to finish the blog for the day, but within a minute or two of walking into the room, I was fast asleep. Others ended up carrying on for a few hours or so until about 1am.
