Jono's Travels
Off to Berlin, German today via Dresden. Arriving in Dresden in an extremely warm day. We took a quick walking tour around the 800 year old city which was pretty well much completely destroyed in WWII and then rebuilt, a lot using some of the stonework from the original buildings. After our walking tour we had an hour and a bit free to explore, so Meg, Damien, Lieu and myself made our way into a church which has been rebuilt due to the fire bombings carried out in the war. We then headed off to try and find somewhere for lunch, we walked for about 10 - 15 minutes to the east to try and find something to eat, only to find the only real place to get something was the mall, we had some lunch and then rushed back towards the bus. Along the way we found a number of places that actually sold what we had been looking for for lunch... Oh well, ya live and ya learn. We got back to the bus and continued on to Berlin where we did a bus tour around the city showing us some of the sites to see. We got out at Treptower Park only to find that the temperature was probably even hotter in Berlin than it was in Dresden. The temperature hitting 31 degrees. We took a look at the Soviet War Memorial, it's a huge memorial area, especially seeing it's just for the memorial of the Soviets. We headed back to the bus and made our way to the hostel, upon arriving I contacted Lana who's a friend from back home in NZ who has moved to Berlin. We organised to catch up and so I checked into the hostel, went to my room and grabbed a quick shower before heading back out to lobby to find Lana and Mel waiting for me, they only live about 1km away from where I was staying which made it really handy. I had a bag of washing so we headed over to their place and put my washing on while we caught up and discussed what to do for dinner, due to the heat none of us really wanted to go too far, so we ordered in some sushi (Yeap they deliver sushi) and then we headed to a nearby park to sit and enjoy dinner outside in the shade. The park wasn't a park like you would be use to back home, instead it was more like a rough looking park which had slabs of rock which you could use like a table and sit on the ground surrounded by weeds. Still it was quite nice. After dinner we headed back to Lana and Mel's place and got the bikes and made our way down the road and took a bike past parts of the Berlin Wall which had been artistically tagged with art, unfortunately some people have gone and tagged over some of the artwork, so at the moment it's going though a cleanup which means a lot of it has been covered by fences to prevent people getting close to it and tagging it which the work is been carried out. We then headed to a small outside bar which if you didn't know was there, would easily go past the entrance for. For those that have been to "Smash Palace" in Christchurch, it had a much similar feel to that, but it was on a much larger scale, had a section for kids to play, had a river going past and they have a bomb fire each night as well. We enjoyed a couple of drinks each and then headed back to their place. My washing wasn't yet dry so I just grabbed some underwear which had dried and a T shirt so I had something to wear tomorrow and then I headed back to my hostel to sleep. Unfortunately as soon as I layer down I started sweating as it's still extremely hot and seeing we have no air conditioning in our room, nor can we open the windows due to being on the ground floor and people being known to jump in the windows as its just down the road from a popular night club.
