Up to Cairns today from Brisbane. We have booked on board the Pro Dive which is a massive luxury boat that will take us out on the reef for 3 days 2 nights doing a total of 11 dives including 2 night dives!
First day we got there we headed out for a couple of bews at the Woolshed which was suprisingly good. The next day we had to go and check in at the dive shop and get all of our gear and wetsuits, stinger suits BCD's sized up.
First day on the boat was really nice, it has finally stopped raining and we are able to sit out in the sun as we travel out to the outer reef. It took 3 hours to get there and was pretty rough. One guy threw up all over the top deck! It was proper projectile stuff, it filled up the bag and split it as well! Good Work!!
First day was spent diving and eating, which turned out to be the normal setup for the day! The deepest dive was 16m which was a little dissapointing but the best thing about it was that we were let loose to roam the reef on our own, which was something that we were not too prepared for. However after a little time with the compasses we got used to it, on our first dive we popped up about 20m away from the boat. From that dive on it only got better.
The night dive was absolutley epic, I was real scared before we dived in because the captain was throwing bits of fish into the water to attract the sharks! Bloody Kiwi's! We jumped into the pitch black water with just a small torch and our compass! I was so nervous when I first jumped in that I forgot to put my regulator in my mouth and tried to breath in real deep breath and almost drowned! HAHA! After that moment of hell the first thing I see is a 2m reef shark swimming towards us! DIVE DIVE DIVE I was shouting as it approached! After a couple of minutes we got used to it and proceeded to explore the dive site! It was an awesome experience, one that will live with me for a long time!
Next day we were up for sunrise which was well worth it, it was crazy! Then it was into the water for our first dive of the day! The water was teeming with activity, the fish that were normally awake at night were still swimming around and the day fish were awake and looking for food! It was by far the best dive. We saw turtles, sharks, rays and a school of about 50 Maori Rasse, which are about a metre long each! It was a hell of a sight to see them swimming towards us, they didn't stop and swam straight through us! Crazy, we just sat there holding out breath hoping not to antagonise them!
After the 11 dives were over we were back on dry land it was a crazy feeling, you had to steady yourself in the shower otherwise you would have fallen over. That night we went out with the whole group, all 32 of us. It was a crazy evening. The German chef, Andy was a funny, FUNNY lad!
Your not allowed to swim in the sea in Cairns because of the crocs and the stingers so they have developed an area called The Lagoon. Its an awesome place to hang out, the 'views' were spectacular
