After our taxi-ferry-bus-ferry-taxi journey from Pankor to Langkawi on
Wednesday we finally arrived in our resort and decided to get
something to eat before finding a hostel, and it would turn out that
the cafe we chose would become our second home - quality food at the
cheapest prices in town served with more than a dash of campness and
very popular with the locals too! But no Hutch they did not serve
food with a pair of scissors to eat it with!
Refreshed from some sunstinance, Nathan and I left the bags with the
girls and headed off to find the best rooms for the night, though by
the time the 4th hostel had said they were full we were just starting
to get a little worried. Then one owner explained that it was STILL
Chinese new year (apparently they get 2 weeks off?!!) and so
everywhere was booked up. We literally checked round pretty much
every standard backpacker accomodation for about 45 minutes and none
had a room. We returned to the girls at the very first one that we
had tried and low and behold the woman had now changed her mind and
said she had one room with 2 doubles in it, so the 4 of us all piled
in together to become roomies for the night!
Although the quest to find the 50p duty free beers proved to be a bit
of a wild goose chase, it wasn't exactly painful to have to accept
paying £1 at our local bar, Babylon. As we chilled out on mats on the
beach around low tables and got introduced to Yhatzee by firelight, we
felt like we were finally experiencing what we had always imagined
travelling in Asia to be! The sunset on Thursday night, with beer in
hand sat on the beach looking out to the surrounding uninhabited
islands, only added to that!
The next 2 days followed a pretty similar theme of wake up and have to
search for a new room for the night (none of which ever had a sink in
the bathroom?!?!), roast on the gorgeous beach as a steady stream of
parasailers came in to land over our heads, and eat more great food at
ye olde faithful - where regardless of the time we seemed to bump in
to Nathan & Justine! And in the evenings, Tiger beers at Babylon over
the standard travel talk kept us all entertained into the small hours.
After a LOT of deliberation we decided to leave Langkawi with Nathan &
Justine on Saturday afternoon and get the boat back South to Penang,
watching an awful horror movie en route!
