So we had an early start on Monday to get up in KL and trek across
town to the other bus station at Kumit Jalil. After waiting an age
for some guy to cook up our roti for breakfast we got on our nice
luxurious bus and spent most of the 4 hours to Lumut snoozing.
Through a spot of faffing we just missed a boat to Palau Pangkor and
so had to hang around a bit at the waterfront for the next one, though
this gave me a bit of time to nurse stubbing my big toe yet again!
Once we pitched up in Pangkor Town we hopped in one of the very
fetching pink taxis that roam the island and then made our way to the
Nazri Nipah Camp where we dumped our bags in a little A-frame hut that
would be our place to stay. Although we were a bit worried about how
hot it was at first it actually turned out to be nice and cool and
quite cosy!
By this time we were pretty hungry and so got some lunch at one of the
standard little family run cafes - though we ended up leaving the
laksa (fish soup- or not so much fish per se as fishy rubbery strands
of god-knows-what) as neither of us could really stomach the smell or
texture! By about 5pm we were finally on the beach and were able to
at long last just lie back and relax until the sun went down behind
the little island out in the middle of the bay - and it sure felt good
to be out of the big cities and in somewhere a bit peaceful, even if
the building work along the beachfront was a bit of an eyesore.
For tea we both had some really nice fresh fish washed down with some
very welcome Tiger beers. We played some cards whilst waiting which
seemed to quite intrigue one of the locals as we could feel him
watching us intently - he literally just pulled up his chair right
next to us and watched without saying a word!
Back at the hostel we hooked up with Nathan and Justine again, who we
had met in KL, and chilled out chatting for a bit whilst Nathan
serenaded us with a bit of the blues on his harmonica.
After a bit of early morning drizzle on Tuesday we soon settled in to
a full day of relaxing at Coral Bay, which was a much nicer beach, and
we did what we had wanted to do for a while -absolutely nothing! We
stayed there until sunset and the bay was really picturesque, and
after another great value dinner we relaxed to the sounds of the
jamming session at the hostel.
Although Pangkor was more than nice enough we had decided to move on
up the coast to another island which is supposed to be even nicer and
so, along with Nathan & Justine, we caught the early morning boat back
to the mainland and managed to get on the 9am bus up to Kuala Perlis
near the Thai border, full from our sweet potato/chilli spring rolls/
donut/incredibly sweet tea breakfast combo, for a bit of Tesco-
spotting en route!
