Hello from Phillip Island, Victoria
Writing this blog back in Melbourne 4months after our visit but was a great little place we visited for the Weekend and needs a little blog to remember it by. Phillip Island is a small island 2hours drive South East of Melbourne connected to mainland Australia. Myself and Brishay went here for a weekend where we both had a lovely time despite some sad news about our puppy Jude from home which maybe over shadowed our visit.
Anyway we rented a car and drove after our work on Friday evening to reach Cowes on Phillip Island which is the main settlement there. Arrived at our American style Drive-In Motel and hit the sack ready to get up nice and early for an adventure around the island. Was brilliant having the rental car as just drove around the island the whole day seeing all that it had to offer. The weather on the Saturday was glorious sunshine without one cloud in the sky.
Our First stop was the Far Western side of the island where the small offshore islands called The Nobbie's were. The islands were quite a distance from the Mainland but was a nice view and lovely to see. The small islands are home to Australia's biggest colony of Fur Seals and also the biggest Great White Sharks sighted in Australia. As am sure you all can imagine i was in my element and did look into renting a boat to go have a look but was far too expensive and even a 2hour ferry ride would have cost near enough 400bucks so sadly wasn't to be. Was a very nice view anyway and a nice walk along the coast where there was a little Information Centre. Driving away from the Nobbie's an Echidna walked out infront of the car. I slammed on the breaks and we both got out to see this little creature. An Echidna basically is a big Hedgehog/Porcupine with a long mouth and funky feet lol. Was great to see one and wasn't to be the last one we would come across in Australia.
Second Stop on the island was the Koala Bear Conservation Centre. This was a definite highlight of the trip seeing around 6/7 wild Koalas in their natural habitats. The Conservation park was quite big so was very lucky to see so many close up. Brishay was in her element here, nearly greeting "OMG How Cuuuuuuuuuuuuute" lol! Not so cute when i told her they carry Chlamydia though hahaha. Seen a few Wilsons Wallabies aswell in the park which are just miniature Kangaroos.
After the Koalas we toured the rest of the island stopping in past at most of the View points which all had pretty nice views across the Tasman Sea. Last stop was late in the evening and is what Phillip Island was famous for - The Penguin Parade. The whole South East of the island is a conservation park for the native Little Penguin which get there name from being about the size of a Water Rat haha. The parade is watching the penguins come out of the surf and waddle up the beach and dunes to little nests. You get really close to them and was good to see them Waddle there way up to there nests. Seen plenty of Seals bobbing around in the surf also which got more of my attention as i would have loved nothing more to see one of these little fluff balls get thrown in the air by a seal hahaha.
With it being quite a small island there wasn't much open past 7pm lol! We were lucky to find a Mexican restaurant still serving so had some nice grub there then grabbed some beers for the room and watched a film. Left the Following morning stopping in past Frankston on the coast to see the Sand Sculpture exhibition which was pretty cool and am sure you will have all seen the pics on Facebook by now.
Phillip Island was a perfect little getaway from city life in Melbourne and although we could have stayed and chilled out bit longer, a weekend was ample time to spend. Glad had nice weather though and definitely would recommend a visit if have time around the area.
