Hello from the beautiful Australian island of Tasmania.
Flew over to Hobart from Melbourne early doors on the Saturday so had the full day to see Hobart and surroundings. Arrived at the airport and picked up our rental car for the 3nights and 4days we were to spend here on Tazzie!
Drove straight from the Airport into central Hobart for our first stop The Salamanca Morning Market. The market was brilliant, heaps of little stalls selling near enough everything you could think of! Ended up spending good hour walking around and bought a German style hotdogs with homemade tomato relish and a miniature Tasmania Devil as a keepsake. Brishay also bought a charm bracelet which had small replicas of the 5main animals native to Australia.
After the market we headed for The Tasman Peninsula and the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. This was a highlight of our trip for me personally as the Tazzie Devil was one of the animals in world I really wanted to see and was so cool to see them so close. Was very interesting reading about the Mouth Cancer that is near enough wiping the wild Devils out and seeing the Devils frolick around pretty much just annoying one and other. Seen a group of 3 devils be fed a piece of roadkill Wallaby which they basically have a tug of war for. Got an amazing video and a heap of good pictures. Also inside the park was an area for a group of Kangaroos and Wallabys, got an amazing picture with a baby Wallaby which pretty much was sitting on our laps.
After the park we toured the peninsula taking in all the sights and seeing some beautiful hills and countryside which reminded us a lot of the countryside at home. We drove back to Hobart in the evening and checked into our Hotel for the night, I say checked in but was greeted by a lady at reception that knew nothing on how to check us in. She was so embarrassed that she gave us a free drink at the bar while we waited for the receptionist to arrive. Wasn't the first Tazzie to be really thoughtful and just generally nice which near enough everyone seemed to be ( Major difference from mainland Auzzies). That night we headed out to the Waterfront where had quite a nice meal and a few drinks before heading back for early night to get up and drive up east coast to Launceston the following day.
Woke up next morning in glorious sunshine. With the good weather we decided to head up Mt Wellington in Hobart which had stunning views over Hobart and the Southern Ocean. View was probably the best we have ever seen and got very lucky with weather seens we were there in the Winter season. Left the spectacular Hobart behind and headed up the East coast stopping in past anything that caught our attention on the way up. Wineglass Bay was a major stop but unfortunately the weather took a bit of turn for the worse and was very foggy so never got to see it as it should be seen as its meant to be in the top 10 for things to see in Auz. Arrived in Launceston late afternoon where we headed for the Cataract Gorge. The gorge was a beautiful little lagoon with mountainous formations surrounding it. That night we went to steak house for dinner and booked our tour for the James Boag brewery in the morning. After we finished our superb steaks we headed to an Irish bar that was showing the Man Utd game. In the bar was a live duo playing songs that both really enjoyed, just reminded me of being back in the Butchers on a Super Sunday lol.
Next morning woke up a little hungover but was absolutely buzzing for the Boags brewery tour. The tour took us all around the brewery and ended with us sampling some of the ales this fine establishment produced. Ended up buying a Beer stubbie holder and a cool beermat which has cool picture of Tasmania as the background and also leaving knowing that Boags probably is the best beer I have tried whilst travelling. After the brewery tour we drove north of Launceston to Beauty Point where we stopped in past The Platypus house. The platypus house housed 4 Platypus which were incredible to see. Animal is incredible, has a bill like a duck, fur like a dog and poison that can kill you. Wierdest animal we have both ever seen but again was so good to see it so close. Will say it is a tiny animal, only like 30cm in length which we were surprised about as thought they were a lot bigger.
After checking the other views in Beauty point we headed west for Devonport and again just checked out the main view points across the Tasman sea where the ferry from Melbourne lands. After that we drove down the West coast to Queenstown. The drive down was done quite late in the evening so the whole drive was a task of dodging the hundreds of Wallabies that bounced out right infront of the car. Thankfully never hit any but had numerous close shaves that thankfully never did any damage to the rental car.
Arrived at Queenstown late on and checked into a motel for the night. Queenstown is a mining town so did not have much to see but was good to break up journey back down to Hobart. Ate at a small club which reminded us of the Garioch bowling club at home, cooked homemade meals really cheap. Following morning headed South to make it to Hobart in time for our Afternoon flight back to Melbourne. Arrived in Hobart with enough time to visit the Cadburys factory here. Got a small tour of the factory which showed us all about the production and general info on Chocolate. Left through the giftshop after spending about $50 on numerous slabs of chocolate haha. Got to airport and headed home having had a superb 3days there.
Tasmania is def one of fav places visited in Australia. The people, food and things to see really did remind us of being at home and loved every minute we spent here. Could have stayed a lot longer but did it in adequate enough time within a good budget so was a good trip all in all. Would definitely recommend a visit to anyone thinking whether or not its worth it but just hope you are as lucky with the weather as we were. Tasmania can have 4seasons in one day, much and much the same as Cape Town in South Africa.
