Hello and welcome to the first blog post from Malaysia with my new travel buddy for the next 3weeks Mr Ian Cumming.
We spent 4days in Thailand around Krabi and on day 4 boarded our bus bound for Penang, Malaysia. Boarder crossing was all straight forward and the same bus took us all the way through to our destination.
We arrived in Georgetown, Penang quite late on after a long days travelling, found an average hotel, dumped our bags and headed out to get some street grub which we read was some of the best in Malaysia. We stopped at some roadside vendors and finally chose to eat at a noodle stand. The noodles were superb and were served with some spicy pork. We grabbed 2 Star fruit shakes served to us in little bags then headed back to get an early night. We woke up and was evident to see how heavy a Muslim country Malaysia is. Woke up at around 6am by the sound of bells and chanting so got showered and decided to explore some of the island. Wasn't really much sights to see to be honest just walk around the cobbled streets mainly around our hotel which was pretty much smack bang in the middle of Little India.
There were a severe lack of taxis in Penang so was a almost a full day of walking. We headed for a big mall on the outskirts of Georgetown as Ian needed new trainers. He eventually chose a pair of ridiculous Everlast trainers which looked like they belonged to Ronald McDonald. From the Mall you could see the gigantic 10Km bridge connecting Penang with mainland Malaysia and the town of Butterworth. That night we headed out to sample the night-life but before that we headed for Little India where we ate at a very local restaurant. We bought 6plates full of food; all authentic Indian food which was amazing and cost no more than £3 for the pair of us, was a fair feast. The night-life in Georgetown was not the best to be honest and majority of places were near enough empty bar the local Alchy propping up the bar. The bars were all quite dingey and grotty and pretty much summed up with a guy outside the main pub/club asking us "Do you want some sex with young girls?", pretty disgusted at the thought we ended the night then which was quite late on anyway or early on being around 4am lol. We jumped in a taxi and took the 5minute ride home to our hotel. When we got up to the room Ian had realised his phone slipped out his pocket in the taxi so we went running back out and up to the point where we got the taxi for the car to be no where to be seen. The other drivers there didn't know the guy so could not get in touch but did know his Reg plate #. With Ian having insurance on his phone it wasn't too big an issue but more annoying not having a phone. We decided to report it to the police in-case they could track his Reg, which they said they may be able to do. 2Police officers went out in their van to look for the taxi, during this time we were sat outside the station with the Chief having some home-made bamboo cigarettes for 1hour and a half lol. On return the 2officers said they could not find the taxi, the chief went inside and then one of the bobby's asked if we would like to buy a bag lol. He went into his motorbike and fetched back a fake Louis Vuitton bag that he tried to flog it off to us lol. We kindly said no thank you and the chief came back out and gave us a run home in the back of his Van lol. We still had a good night though, so good that we were too hungover to get up for a ferry to nearby Pulau Langkawi the following morning haha. We never bought our tickets so was no big deal just spent the day hungover and ventured out for a Subway for supper and bought our 3Hour ferry tickets for the following morning to Pulau Langkawi.
Penang had been a good taster of Malaysia and been good to see. We will be spending one night here again on return from Langkawi so maybe have one more cheeky night out lol. Now for Malaysia's biggest island, Langkawi where hopefully the weather will improve as has not been to good past couple of days.
Over and Out
