Started the day at Mariposa Grove at the south end of Yosemite NP. This is where there are anumber of large sequoia trees. Two in particular got our attention; one was call Grizzley Giant and the other was the Californian Tree. The former has a large base but has been struck by lightning many times and lost its top. The latter is very tall and very wide at the base. It has also suffered lightning strikes but this has only burned the base. The burnt area has been cut out and you walk through the tree (see photos).
Next stop was the Yosemite Valley. It was a good job we stopped at Tunnel View yesterday to get pictures. It was subject to roadworks today and the lookout is closed now until next week.
Activities in the valley had to wait until after lunch which we had at the Ahwahnee Lodge which is one of those old world places where everything slows down.
The Yosemite falls were air only. Being the end of summer the creek had dried up. There was not even a drop of water going over. Bridalveil falls were also dry. Vernal falls had a small bit of water going over so the Merced River was just running.
We watched climbers on El Capitan, and later, when we went to Glacier Peak, we saw climbers settling in for the night on Half Dome.
Yosemite landforms can keep you wanting to look for hours. The rangers say that the Sierras are all part of one rock and Yosemite is part of that rock.
Tomorrow (Friday) we head for San Francisco.
