Olloa and welcome to the island of Maui.
We arrived at Lahaina, Maui by tender. Lahaina means "cruel sun", because of the very little rain each year and today was no exception, the suntans are coming along very nicely, thank you Lahaina!
Found by Captain Cook and originally named the Sandwich Islands, Lahaina reminded us of Key West, Florida, with its little restaurants, shops and bars. We met Jeremy our tour guide and minivan driver and after a short walk through the town to see the famous Banyan Tree that sprawls across the town square, we set off on our excursion.
Our minivan took us towards the Valley of the Kings and the West Maui Mountains, with it's beautiful and unspoilt scenery, we drove through shallow streams and bumpy roads, forbidden to regular traffic to the secret village of Kahakuloa, with it's plantation of tarro. Having made it sucessfully across the shaky wooden bridge, we stepped back in time and our guide explained what the old island life was like.
For the lunch break we stopped at the Kaukin Art Gallery for fruit and banana bread and some gift shopping before heading back to Lahaina via the Mount Haleakala crater which is 7 miles wide.
Back in town, we bought lays for our Hawaiian deck party back on board. Well the pictures tell it all!
