We didn't realise how big Honolulu was going to be, it's has a big commercial city and many high rise apartments and hotels. Honolulu is the main city on the island of Oahu and is famous for Pearl Harbour and Waikiki Beach to name a couple.
Our tour today was to Pearl Harbour and the World War 2, Pacific National Monument Centre, it's all very professionally laid out and explains the story behind the Pearl Harbour attack and the way the USA got involved in the war. It was very moving, after a short film we travelled by boat to the memorial of the US Arizona, the memorial is positioned above the sunken ship and below 1177 men are entombed from the 1941 attack. After the tour we drove through the Punchbowl National Cemetery where honoured veterans are buried.
Further we travelled to the Pali lookout on Oahu's windward side for a great view of the city and mountains beyond. As we returned to Honolulu we stopped to admire the Iolani Palace, the only Royal Palace on American soil and the statue of King Kamehameha who united the Hawaiian islands.
A short taxi ride took us to the famous Waikiki beach, which looked like Bridlington on a Bank Holiday Monday, it was so jammed! We didn't stay too long because Stuart spotted a Macy's on the way there so we called in for some retail therapy before heading back to the ship. "Homolulu indeed" how very dare you!
Four days heading south at sea, will find us arrive at Apia in Western Somoa on Wednesday after crossing the equator on Monday, we travel from Winter to Summer in just a few seconds! Great!
