We got up at half six and showered and cleaned up. Despite having air-con the nights are still sticky. We are still really apreciating all the luxuries we didnt have at Uncle Tan's. We found our way up to the roof for breakfast, The usual Tea/Coffee and toast here, but thats fine, the veiw is really good. We caught a bus to 'mile seven' a throw back to collonial times when each village was named after how far from Sandakan it was. Sandakan was the old colonial capital of British North Borneo and was taken by the Japanese in about 1942. It was then subsequently flattened by the Allies when they took Borneo back in about 1945. From 'Mile Seven we went to see the Memorial to the 1600 'Death March Prisoners Of War' built on the site of a japanese Prisoner of War Camp. ( if there are gramatical mistakes in this blog then tough, I'm having trouble remembering what day it is let alone how to spell or where to put a comma) The gardens of the Memorial are peacefull and beautiful but it's a very sad place, it made us think that even in the jungle we had luxury compared to what these soilder's went through. On the way back we asked the bus conductor to stop at the Agnes Keith Museum, but he decided not to, so we ended up back at the bus station, Oh well!
We headed to a cafe to get a drink, on our way we met Jan, a Dutch lad who had seen us at Uncle Tan's office, so he joined us, we chatted for a while about what we could do next, and decided to go to the National Park and flower garden so we went to get a taxi, but none of them wanted to take us because it wasn't far enough, (Actually I think they didn't know where it was. J) so we thought ok we'll catch the bus, tried to explain to the conductor where we wanted to go, he didn't look too sure but told us to get on the bus, after a couple of miles they told us the bus only went to Mile Four, we would have to get off and catch another, ( easy peasy) Oh no! nothing is that easy, every bus that came along didn't know where we wanted to go then it started to rain, we kept trying each bus then thought, to hell with this game, crossed the road and caught a bus back to town.
Went to the supermarket and got some snacks and beer's and went up to the roof, sat chatting for a couple of hours chilling and watching the fishing boats. John went on the computor to upload more pictures, I read my book for a while. In the evening we took Jan to the night market, again and had another great meal, we found out the fish we had been eating was Stringray, and even though we saw a rat saunter under the counter it's still a good place for food ( load's of locals eat here) Went to the bar on the front had a couple of buckets then called it a night.
