The alarm shout came at six again, but because there wasn't enough space in the boats our group didn't have to get up so we waited untill the camp had emptied and then got up for a leisurely 'shower' and a nice cup of coffee listening to the jungle wake up. 'Rinda' had a connection to catch and left at eight, we all said our farewells and then, just after she left camp with Tony towards the Jetty, Tony cane running back, he had spotted an Orang Utan, in its nest where it had spent the night. Dippy Aussie, Abba 1,2 and 3 and John went running to see it, I couldn't bring myself to put my feet into wet muddy boots again. (Neither could I, and decided to go barefoot which was brilliant, you know squelchy mud oozing up between your toes. J.)Most people got a peep at it but because the other group were returning from their river safari it got a bit spooked and started to move off. Everyone was pleased to have seen it, one of our group got some video footage of it and showed us.
After another brilliant breakfast we packed our bags and left the camp at ten. I'm not sure whether I'm pleased or not, we all definitly need a good shower. We got back to the village where the minibusses were waiting and were taken back to the office in Gum Gum. We had lunch when we got there and then found a taxi to take us into Sandakan. We got to the Harbour Square B&B, booked in and sorted out our stinking clothes and had a shower (bliss) (It's hard to describe how dirty and smelly we were, despite our best efforts to keep clean and wash and stuff! J) We had a wander about to get our bearing's then had to stop for a drink, (John has got the lergy). Went back to the Hostel, and John went on the computer to upload the pictures and to write the blog. We met a couple, Claus and his wife, we can't remember her name, but we both immidiately thought she is the spitting image of Sarah. Like you do I asked him what part of Germany he was from and he asked me what part of France we came from Woops! one of the first rules of travelling is never assume you know where people come from. Its very easy to offend. It turns out that they were Austrian, still as they say S*** happens. Claus was very interesting as he was a career soldier in the Austrian Special forces and had served all over the world.
In the evening we all went to one of the bar's along the front for a few beer's (has to be done) Claus and 'Sarah' suggested after a while that we went to the night market for food, This was really good food and very cheap. We had a huge piece of fish about 18 inches long on a banana leaf, with rice, and various other dishes which we could only guess what they were. Ours worked out at just under two pounds fifty for both of us. Stuffed to the gills we went back to the bar for a few more, then headed off to bed.
