Left for the reef early in the morning from cairns harbour to spend a couple of days bobing about on a big boat, the Kangaroo Explorer. Got a lift out to it on an old fashioned fishing boat which made alot of noise and big waves, but didnt go too fast. The crew on all the boats were very good craic and made great feeds for us.
First reef we were on was Miln Reef where we done a snorkel over the top of the reef, seen plenty of bright coloured fishes and wee tiny jellyfish which took a liking to Joanne. We headed on to another spot on the same reef called the three sisters where we got the snorkelling gear out again for a dip in the pool. Then we signed ourselves up for introductory scuba dives and had a crack at it. Our instructor took me down to 4/5 metres first which wasnt too much of a problem until he left me there for 15 minutes while he tried to get Jo down. Unfortunately jo couldnt get her ears to pop properly and the pain was too much so she couldnt get more than a couple of metres down. After jo got out we headed on down to the bottom of the ocean/reef where we had a seat at a depth of 14.2 metres. Swam about for about 20 minutes down there, instructor left me for a while to take pictures which was a little concerning at that depth as I knew i coulnt just swim to the surface. Seen and picked up alot of wee animal/plant things and swam around and through the first of the three sisters. Seen the first Nemo's there (the wee orange fish), the reef was pretty amazing to see especially getting to swim around, up and down and through it.
We took another scuba dive that night, didnt see quite as much as it was dark but luckily we had a few torches with us, got to 13.8 metres and were down for about 25 minutes before I started to get a bit short on air. Not too sure exactly where we went on the reef but think we spent the most of it down the main wall, but we did spot a few reef sharks while we were down there.
The next morning we took another couple of snorkels at the same spot and were in the pool to watch the sun some up. A few of us followed a turtle, getting plenty of pictures as we went. Turtle didnt swim that fast, and he didnt mind us touching his sheel but seemed to get a bit pissed off when we touched his feet and head while he was swimming along so we left him to it before he bit us. We seen quite a few more sharks, but luckily there didnt come too close, and seen plenty of nemo's and other coloured fishes both big and small.
We moved onto Moore reef later in the morning to a spot called East Timor. Got back in for our last scuba where we went to 12.1 metres, seen alot of giant clams, almost big enough for us to fit inside!
Had a brilliant time out on the reef, would definately go back for longer for more scuba and snorkelling.
