Fraser island was briiliant, highlight of Oz so far.
After getting onto the ferry and onto the island of sand I made sure we got our money worth out of the Landcruiser. The island is only made of sand but is covered in a rainforest so bouncing over the tree roots kept everyone awake. We headed like everyone else for central station, getting stuck behind some eijit that kept getting stuck in the sand. At central station we took a stroll through the rainforest and down a creek.
We left the beaten track and headed for Lake Birabeen, the single track through the rainforest turned rough a few times but nothing the Toyota and I couldnt rip through. Lake Birabeen was a great wee spot and as it turned out was alot better than the tourist filled, world famous Lake McKenzie with only us on its beach. The fresh water was a welcomed refreshment and I was glad not to spot any crocs while paddling about.
We headed back through central station and made it in one piece to the east of the island on the beach, which was a massive relief after the morning of humps and bumps we had endured through the rainforest. Heading north up the beach we had to head back inland twice to get past a few rockly parts on the beach which were a little too much for a jeep to handle. I eventually relenquished the driving to Paul and onto Samantha and we headed north up the beach towards Eli creek. At the creek we took a short trek up through the rainforest and jamp back into the fresh water which carried us back to the ocean, and fortunately not into it as it was full of sharks. From there we headed north again and stopped off at the wreck off the big ship, some japs bought for scrap but got washed up there and the aussie`s used for bombing practise! Tents were pretty good at our campsite and everyone gave me and jo the previllage of a honeymoon tent - our own 7 man tent to ourselves! The women cooked us a bbq and we feasted into the night!
Day 2 - We headed north again for indian head to look out for some fishes. We spotted alot of whales and sharkes along with a few manarays and sholes of fish just before it started to rain, which was the first time for us in oz even though it was the middle of winter! Regarless of the rain we headed on along a beach/cove to the champaigne pools. There was alot more pool than champage and the sea water instead of fresh didn`t make us stsay for long. After a long walk back to the jeep and a spot of lunhc we haeading south for eli creek stopping off at red canyon and the pinnicles. After floating down the creek a few more times we headed back to camp for another evening feast.................mulled wine and bbq cabbage! Last day we headed for Lake McKenzie and chilled out before the rain chased us off! It was a rreal nice place but Lake Birabeen was much better! Definately head back to fraser again and the sooner the better but next time we would take advantage of the fishermens catch!!!
