By now your probably seeing a recurring theme. Long distances, lack of any tangible scenery except vast hinterland, reminiscent of the steppes of Russia. As we ventured yet further south the temperature dropped and the wind picked up. The dust was replaced by a wind swept grass and sheep began to outnumber cows and horses.
We left Puerto Madryn I think on the 17th. The first day of driving was a solid 12hour uneventful effort. The 18th, now that was something to be proud of 16hours! We had one ferry crossing across the straits of malgallen, from Argentina into Chile, and then from Chile back into argentina as we reached Tierra del Fuego on the 18th (the land of fire). I think it has somthing to do with the colour of yellowly grass because as the temperature was minus somthing, there certainly wasnt any risk of fire. We saw some dolphins on the ferry and the scenery began to improve. Hills began to swell up like waves in the distance and we urged ever closer towards them.
As we arrived back across into argentina at about 11pm, and the temperature was already well below freezing we talked a very nice service station owner into cooking us dinner. He was so kind, or maybe we were just such great guests that he let us sleep on the floor of his service station. Now I understand that for those of you tucked up at home with central heating running water etc, this may not sound like much. But I can assure you that I have never been so thankful for a service station in all my life. We slept there and left early on the 19th for Ushuaia.
