Tired from our journey we grabbed a Chinese meal just a few streets away from our hotel and went to bed. The next day we explored the city and just about covered everything on the map, by foot! Malaysia had been under British rule until the 1950's and this was very clear from the architecture found in Georgetown. The locals also spoke English as if it was there first language which was handy! For such a small town it was very multicultural with mosques, church's, Buddhist and Hindu temples all within a few hundred yards of each other.
Penang is renowned for its excellent food with street vendors all selling their own speciality dishes. Despite the huge variety it was almost impossible to find any vegetarian food, except for little India where there were several vegetarian restaurants. We found one for dinner called Woodlands where the food was delicious and very cheap! Top of the list of things to do was Penang hill and the Buddhist temple. After a breakfast of dumplings with sweet sickly fillings which neither of us enjoyed we caught a bus to the Buddhist temple which is the largest in south east Asia. We climbed the steps to the 7th floor of the temple and looked out over the city. We noticed that there was a 'vegetarian' restaurant at the bottom of the temple so before heading to Penang hill we stopped there for lunch. The menu included vegetarian fish head soup, vegetarian mutton curry and just about every meat dish with the word vegetarian in front of it. Very confused I just had rice and veg (the only real veg option)! As we got off the train at the top of Penang hill we immediately noticed the cooler temperature. The hill station had been identified by the British as an area where they could get away from the city and enjoy the cooler climate. As you might guess there are many English looking country homes located here. The panoramic views of the island were also stunning and after taking a few snaps we headed back to our hotel. We had intended to get a bus the next day to kuala lumper. As it was fully booked we stayed another night spending our final day on the beach where we both enjoyed a delicious Malay curry!
