We were Both looking forward to Melaka as we had heard great things about it. The town was multicultural with its habitamts from Portugal, China, Malaysia, India and other parts if Southeast Asia which gave Melaka a really cosmopolitan feel. We only spent two nights here but managed to cover most of the sights on foot. To give our tired feet a rest we also took a boat trip along the canal whilst learning more about the history. There is a real mix of architecture here from the early Portuguese settlers in the 1500's to the Dutch and of course British and Chinese. We particularly liked the area around Stadthuys - an impressive 17th century Dutch building near the river; there was a nice atmosphere and it was busy with locals and tourists. The variety of restaurants too was fantastic as well as hawker stalls and despite being a vegetarian i managed to eat Indonesian and Malay food. We had purposely timed our trip here to coincide with the weekend as there was a market on which I think was run predominantly by the Chinese. After passing through the market on our first night we sat down and watched live singers on an outside stage. There was also an old Chinese bloke dancing on his own in front of the stage which kept us amused. (I do have a video of this) After having yet another Indian for lunch on our last day we made our way to the bus station where a coach would take us to Singapore.
