Whitneys on Tour
We arrived here via a truly horrible night bus ride from Nha Trang. The bus was packed and we got the two worse seats in the house at the back, in the corner. There was precious little leg room, the seats were cramped and you just couldn't get even the remotest bit comfortable. Every time you woke up your neck was stiff and we arrived very grumpily and groggily in Hoi An at 6.30am on 4th June after 11 hours of misery. We had this coming I guess paying $29 for bus rides up the entire country. You get what you pay for!
This is a beach town, with colonial architecture and is particularly famed for it's cheap tailor shops which just had to be taken advantage of. It's actually possible to get a tailored suit for $35 here but when the prices are so low it seemed pointless to cheapskate so Stuart went for a couple of 'expensive' $70 and $55 suits. Not bad to put it mildly when the fabric is wool and cashmere. We did a little deal with our tailors for the two suits, two handmade shirts, a pair of tailored trousers for Jo and a silk tie for the princely sum of $155 and sent the lot back to New Zealand. All the clothes were of real quality and the girls in the shop made a big fuss of getting everything right.
Shopping in this town is an absolute dream as superb shoes, art & craft and excellent household items were in abundance and you could have shopped till you dropped. So many times on this trip you have absolute dross shoved in your face at every moment but this was a different story.
The beach was pretty nice too and the restaurants were amoung the best we've eaten in so we certainly enjoyed our time here. One problem though, the heat, which was just unbearable. We went on a day trip to some temple ruins which just turned into an unpleasant sweat fest in temperatures over 40 degrees as it seems to be every day in these parts.
We had some good news here as Jo received a job offer which she accepted. She had her pick from the schools she applied to and got the job she wanted via a phone interview. She has had to jump through hoops of red tape to sort out her New Zealand teachers registration which isn't easy when you're thousands of miles away but it seems to be sorting itself out. Therefore both of us are pretty much sorted out workwise for our return to New Zealand which is obviously encouraging.
We left on the 7th for Hue
