Day 70 - Siem reap
We got to Siem reap early and were all really tired, so we got to our hotel and went to bed. When we got up we went to explore Siem reap, which is a great city! We had lunch and then went to the hotel swimming pool. It was very hot so we sat in the pool and had some beers. When we were going for dinner we got a tuk tuk to Pub Street, which is exactly that, a street full of pubs! So our night turned into a drunken night of dancing!
Day 71 - Siem reap
We woke up feeling a bit worse for wear but the plan for today was to visit the temples of Angkor, so we for ed ourselves up and had some beans on toast to start us off. The hotel staff got us two tuk tuks to take us on a tour of the temples. First stop was the hot air balloon ride, which I was very excited about, but it was closed! We headed over to Angkor Wat, which is the main attraction here. It is a huge temple built on the 1300's, it took us over an hour to walk around the whole thing and we were very impressed by it. We were hoping to come back at the end of the day and see the sunset behind Angkor Wat, but it was a cloudy day and the sunset was rubbish. Next stop was the Bayon temple, or the temple of a thousand faces. This one was quite creepy as their are faces of all sizes carved into the entire temple, and they all look like they are watching you! The upkeep of this one was also pretty minimal so there were lots of parts which had collapsed and worn away. We saw lots of other temple ruins on the way which were nice but less impressive. It was the most humid day since we have been in Asia so we were very very hot and sticky, so we stopped off for an ice lolly and bought the tuk tik drivers one too. Then we went to the tomb raider temple. This temple is in the jungle, and the Tomb raider movie was filmed here. I really liked this one, as the trees had grown through the temple. It was like the trees were taking over it, as they had grown through the Walls and were surrounding some areas which were completely embedded in the trees. Around the temple areas there are hundreds of children trying to sell things and woman with stalls at the side of the paths. By the time we had saw the last temple we couldn't wait to get in the tuk tuk and drive away from all the people! It's so stressful at times as they are very persistent. At one point we had a little girl follow us for around five minutes saying over and over again "10 postcard only $1 dollar please please" and she was pulling our arms and everything, it gets really hard after you've said no thankyou more than 30 times to the same child then the next one starts and you've got to do it all again! So we got back and started the lovely drive home, where we saw lots of wild monkeys at the road sides. One even made an attempt at coming in our tuk tuk! When we got back we decided to keep up with our Cambodian cultural day and went for a Cambodian barbecue for dinner. It was really good! They put a charcoal stove in middle of our table which had a section for cooking our meat, and another section with stock in where they added noodles and vegetables. We chose 5 meats each. I chose beef, chicken, shrimp, squid, and crocodile. Michael chose beef, chicken, crocodile, kangaroo and snake. My favourite was the crocodile, it was really good! The snake was disgusting. So we got to cook our own meat at the table and had an all you can eat supply of noodles, rice, veg and the soup stock. It was a really good meal and we enjoyed the traditional barbecue style a lot. After dinner Michael went back to the hotel and the girls went to the night Market. It was really good and we all bought lots of nice things! Although everything I bought was for other people. Then we went back to the hotel as the girls were getting the night bus to Bangkok. We can't go back into Thailand for another two days because of visa restrictions, and because the girls are on a short trip they want to see another of the islands in Thailand, so they are going to Koh Tao tomorrow and we will meet them in Koh Phangan on sat for the full moon party!
Day 72 - Siem Reap
We had a chilled out day not doing much. We had booked a night bus tonight back to Bangkok, so we had dinner and went to our room to pack our bags and wait for our bus. We then got an email from Emily saying not to get that bus, they had a really bad experience on it the night before, so we changed it for the early morning bus. Which meant we could go to bed!
