Spent the day in Bern (Swiss capital) with Rach, Raf and some of their friends. We came for Zwibeli märt, an onion festival/market which is packed with food, market stalls, an odd wine called glüwein and tonnes and tonnes of confetti!
As soon as we got out of the train station we could see the streets littered with confetti. Children and teenagers buy bags of it and throw it at fellow market goers. Your only defence is to buy your own bag, scoop some up from the street, or buy yourself one of the soft hammers which are also widely available. Of course they all have hammers too. They make little noises when you give someone a whack.
Luckily there was enough of us to form a formidable team and we whomped and confettied many Swiss men, women and children. It was great fun!
As we came out from dinner at about 7:30 the streets, in typical Swiss fashion, were already clean! Street sweepers and vacuums were being used and the place would soon look like nothing out of the ordinary had occurred that day. I will still remember in days to come as I'm sure I will still be finding confetti in my clothes!
Tomorrow I fly to Budapest where I'm told "not many speak English and you have to cross the road very quickly!" Looking forward to it :)
