This morning we drove for two hours to reach Pinniwala Elephant Orphanage. There are 84 elephants there and all have been rescued from areas around Sri Lanka. We arrived in time to see a procession of elephants going down to the river to bathe. They stay there for 2 hours. While this was starting we walked around the orphanage to see some of the other elephants and to feed them some leaves. All of the keepers were very friendly. When we walked down to the river the elephants were in small groups, some standing and a few being bathed. It was wonderful to sit and watch them enjoying the water and socialising with one another.
We left Pinnawala and drove for another few hours to reach Sigiriya where we will climb Lion Rock some time in the next few days. We are staying at a beautiful resort - Aliya Resort and Spa. The rooms are dotted around the grounds in groups of 4 and the reception area is perched high where you get a magnificent view of the rock. The infinity pool is huge and was a welcome spot at the end of a day's travelling. I'm sure we'll enjoy our three nights here!
