We arrived in Colombo yesterday morning after driving along the coast road. We stopped briefly at a turtle hatchery and saw the conservation work that this group of young men do by collecting and incubating turtle eggs before returning the hatchlings to the sea. Amazingly there are five species of turtles that inhabit Sri Lankan waters.
We arrived at our hotel in the early afternoon and, after settling in, went for a walk back to the waterfront and then back to our hotel. We had an ice cream while walking along the waterfront, less than $1 for a drumstick. We also found a local food shop and ate some of the various pastries we have come to enjoy- fish, egg, vegetable - all a little bit spicy but not overwhelming. It seemed that the humidity had increased while we were out and by the time we arrived back at the hotel we were drenched in sweat again.
After a rest we went downstairs for a drink at the bar before dinner and enjoyed the sights of a traditional wedding crowd. The women in their saris were simply stunning!
This morning there was another wedding while we were eating breakfast - the man in traditional Kandian dress and his beautiful bride in a golden jewelled sari and head dress.
We went for a drive around Colombo this morning and admired the many colonial buildings and well manicured gardens around them. We also enjoyed some traditional markets where there were small warehouses filled with a huge variety of vegetables. We were amazed at the men hauling huge sacks of vegetables on their backs, stooped under their great weight.
We enjoyed lunch at the small bakery in our hotel and have spent the afternoon getting prepared for our morning flight to Kuala Lumpur then on the Melboirne tomorrow.

Susan What a thrilling trip this has been. I loved hearing about the turtles - I had no idea there were so many varieties of sea turtles. I'll bet the wedding parties were gorgeous. I once saw a Korean party when I stayed in a hotel, and the clothing was so beautiful. I hope your property at home was safe in all that rain!
