My Camino Journey
Today is a big day, 31.2km. We all decided yesterday that it would be nice to do the walking today without our backpacks. So last night we organised a company to pick up our bags in the morning and take it to the next Albergue we were staying in, and this only cost us 5€.... So cheap. So this morning we got all packed up, left our backpacks in the reception foyer with our tags on them which include the 5€ in the envelope. We all had smaller day bags which had our essentials like money, passports, phones and snacks, and boy did it feel weird leaving the Albergue with no heavy backpack on. Although we had over 30km to walk we all had a spring in our step today, with no heavy packs it was so much easier to walk. We covered 10km to Villavante thinking about coffee only to discover that because it was Sunday nothing opened there until lunchtime.... So on we went for another 4km to Hospital de Orbigo desperately hoping there would be coffee when we got there.... And luckily there was. We filled up on tortillas, croissant and coffee and then continued through the rest of the town, which was really lovely. They even has a jousting arena which overlooked the river which when the festival is on would look absolutely amazing.... We took lots of photos there. Still with a spring in our step we racked up 6km through a couple more little cute villages, I was so grateful that Silas had told us to take this alternate route and that we got to see some of these little villages that we may have missed had we just stayed on the normal Camino path. (Thanks Silas ;) ) Back on the normal path and with another 11.2km to go before we hit Astorga we pass by a few farms that seemed to cover all the bases, they had cattle for milk, vines for grapes and corn for food, it was really unusual to see a farm with such a mixture of produce. Then out in the middle of seemingly nowhere we stopped at a little place that you could get drinks and food for a donativo, there was a guy names David that lived there and had just a very simple hippy life (pictures attached) we stayed for a while and Phil even relaxed for a bit in David's hammock..... The last couple of kilometres were boring and hard, we got to the 25km mark and my body started to feel sore and tired. I was so glad when we reached our Albergue just a bit before 2.30pm. We started walking at 6am so it was a long day. After we showered and organised our stuff (yes our bags arrived safe and sound to our Albergue). We walked the short distance back into the town squared for a late lunch early dinner. We found this amazing restaurant which had an amazing pilgrim menu of 3 courses as well as wine. I had seafood paella, then meatballs and chips and dessert was a chocolate mousse cake thing which was to die for. Totally satisfied we went for a walk around town to check out what else was around. In the town square they were setting up for a folk dancing festival, which we ended up sitting and watching pretty much all afternoon.
