My Camino Journey
Because today was only a short day (it's funny how we now classify walking 20km as a short day) and we had hotel rooms we decided we would have a little bit of a sleep in which was really nice, this meant we were on the road after a quick coffee stop by 8.45am. Silas came down to the coffee shop to say a final good bye to everyone, he would be spending the day in Leon and then catching the train to Barcelona to fly back to Denmark. We will all miss Walking with Silas and I will certainly miss our fun conversations, spending the last week or so with him has been fun. Walking out of Leon and its surrounding suburbs seemed to take a while, but by the time we hit the open road we had already covered 8.5km which was a nice feeling. Silas had also told us if we took the alternate route we could stay in Villar de Mazarife and the Albergue there called San Antonio de Padua was really lovely, he had stayed there 2 years ago when he travelled the Camino from Leon to Santiago de Compostela and thought that we would really like it, plus the alternate route normally is much more scenic because it doesn't walk along the main road. The alternate route today was pretty boring but was flat and made the kilometres fairly easy. We had our own snacks on the way so didn't really have to stop, only for a couple of wee stops. Walking into Villar de Mazarife, there was not much to this town, it was very small. But as we got closer to the Albergue it was like a little oasis. It had lovely green lawn out the front with banana lounges and the ladies at the front desk greeted us with big smiles. We checked in, showered, handed in a pile of washing and then made the short walk into the town square to find something to eat and a supermarket. I was able to get a burger at the bar which was delicious and then we went to the small supermarket to stock up on supplies for tomorrow's walk. Back at the Albergue we all had a little Siesta before dinner, which was an amazing 4 course pilgrims meal. Which included salad, gaspasho, paella then crapes for desert.... Needless to say we were all totally stuffed by the end, going to bed in a total food coma.
