My first at in the community was a fantastic day. I was with a special needs class of 19 children between the ages of 9 and 13. They were in this class because they were falling behind in their class so once they caught up they would rejoin their normal classes. After 3 flights and a 6hour bus ride I made it safely to Antelope Park - with my luggage (others weren't so lucky). Our first day consisted of introduction talks about the aims of the park and reasons for the conservation of these majestic animals. The irony of the lion symbolically so strong and powerful and yet in reality so vulnerable. After these talks I was then able to go on my first lion walk! Today we rounded up all the cattle and put them in the yards to be mouthed and divided into those we were keeping and selling. We had to check the teeth as we sell the ones that have no or not many teeth so we could sell them while there still fat to get the best price. After hours of pushing them through and then pushing them into the different paddocks we were finished. But the next day we had a small group of 20 cattle to mouth and preg tested. Today we did some target practice and Ed showed me how to shoot. I first had a go on the 22 which is the smaller brown rifle. I shot a few rounds at the target 50metres away and hit just slightly to the left of my target which I was happy about. After that we walked back 100metres and he once again showed me how to shoot with his 22-250 rifle which is a big boy. Today was my first day on the farm. Gemma the current backpacker on the farm showed me around the farm walking me down to the creeks where we saw a couple of kangaroos in the field. Once Ed, the farmer arrived back we were emptying the 50,000 litre water tank which took all day and the next morning. We then hosed down the tractor and two yutes or pick up trucks. In which me and Gemma had to try get a dead rat out of the tractor which was stuck inside a tiny hole....
