We have learnt that greyhound travel in America is not like it is in Australia, the Las Vegas depot was very strange with drunk people talking to themselves and there was one girl who had high heels and a rediculously short dress on (especailly in this winter weather), I accidentally looked at her for 1 second and she started going off to her friend about wanting to bash me, I just ignored her and looked away but is is very hard to stand in a bus line for an hour not wanting to look anywhere for fear of being bashed or asked for money. We didn't take any photos as we didn't want to risk gettting our camera stolen, we also tried to stay on the bus the whole time so no-one would steal our gear, we are clearly a lot more paranoid than anyone else with our locks on everything. Travelling overnight is great to avoid paying for a hotel but when you get in at 7am and can't check-in until 1pm and have had no sleep through the night you don't really appreciate anything especially when you see your hostel room which smells of cigarrettes and has hairs in the bed, on the bright side though it is only $36/night for both of us and we have used our shammy towels and sleeping slips for the first time. At this stage we have also managed to avoid getting bed bugs though most of the people who wrote reviews on this hostel seemed to get them (We have learnt to take more notice of reviews and not just assume people are being picky). San Francisco is a lovely city, we are staying in a great location right near the financial district, chinatown and little Italy. According to the Lonely planet (thanks Aunty Anne) San Francisco has 10 times more restaurants per capita than any other US city which is true, everywhere we look there is somewhere to eat and they tend to have healthier options as well which is great. San Francisco is known as one of the safest cities in the U.S, if you get caught stealing from anyone you automatically get 4 years in prison. There are so many things to do here, we have done a 2hour open top city tour with a very funny host, an Alcatraz island tour, bike riding across the golden gate bridge, window shopping at union square, viewed sea lions and been to the local markets. Alcatraz was very interesting and definately worth doing, I have added a couple of videos for those who are interested (they are a bit boring but its hard to capture how good it is on film). Hiring bikes to ride across the golden gate bridge was great although I think they should give you a warning that it is strenuous exercise because I was not prepared to ride up the hills (I guess everywhere isn't as flat as Longreach), the trip back was fantastic though because it was downhill and it was fun watching all the people who were just starting and wondering if they would even make it up there. We have booked flights with Virgin America to San Diego and thought we got a really good deal however they don't include baggage over here so we have to pay another $25 per bag. We have three more days here and fly to San Diego on the 17th. We are definately glad we booked a week here and if it wasn't for the dodgy room and overall expensive accommodation we could probably have stayed longer. Overall we have loved San Francisco.
