The Full Moon Party, the reason we travelled to Thailand 4 days earlier, the reason I spent hours researching the event to see what the fuss is about.....
Firstly lets just say I'm lucky I can even remember enough of the night to write this blog and even luckier that I got back in one piece. The only word I can think of that describes the night best is CARNAGE!
We started the day by getting a speed boat over to Koh Pan Yang from Samui, for 1000 Baht per head (£20) 30 of us got on board this 25-30 foot speed boat, 3 250HP engines and streamlined more than a dolphin. I knew this was going to be fast and at night I must admit I was a little nervous about making the journey safely. The pilot slow moved us out of the harbour and then bang, full throttle and this boat just powers over the waves, bouncing around, taking 3 foot swells in its stride. Isla' hair was all over the place, a group of Malaysian lads were taking the piss out of their friend who chose to eat moments before the journey and I'm holding on feeling like an extra in James Bond.
We arrived on Koh Pan Yang little after 30 minutes and straight away the streets are lined with stalls trying to sell you buckets of alcohol and fluorescent paint. We queued up to get our first bucket, for 400 baht (£8) we got a 500ml bottle of whiskey, a bottle of red bull and a bottle of coke. Like the feeling I get when someone hands me a Sambuca, knowing it will finish me off, the sight of that whiskey bottle being poured in just had me beat before it even touched my lips.
We then purchased some paint and started decorating over body part that wasn't clothed. We walked the streets amongst a thousand or so other party goers and headed for the beach walking past stall after stall selling more buckets. We hit the beach and for miles it was DJ stand after DJ stand playing their own set and somehow you could only hear the music of the stand you were at.
We strolled up to the far end were there is a place called Mushroom Mountain (No explanation required) a member from the group to the walk up but Isla and I gave that a miss as we didn't fancy seeing leprechauns whilst heavily in drink. It looked like something out of the pied piper with a stream of people walking up the mountain and then coming down a changed person.
At this point one of the group was sick in the sea and it became clear she would not be the only one. We continued dancing and drinking threw the night and waited for the countdown. For some reason just before the New Year came in, I went in the sea for a wee as they had no toilets and missed the NewYear arrival. As you can imagine, I was in big trouble of this.
After the New Year we spent a good hour looking for our group but could not find anyone. I was in a bad way and needed to get back, so we decided to walk back towards the port. Once at the port we had to queue like cattle between metal gates to wait for the ferry. Unfortunately we had to wait 30 minutes to long and I had to be sick over th pier edge. This was not all bad as we met some lovely New Zealanders who gave up their water.
We managed to eventually get on the boat and we headed back at full steam ahead. I don't remember much about this journey as I just wanted to sleep but about 5 minutes from the end Isla was being sick over the edge of the boat with the help of our friendly New Zealander holding her hair back. Isla says it was travel sickness but I think otherwise. Now obviously the sight and sound of this didn't do me any good so there I was joining Isla being sick. We did however hear a great quote "THOSE WHO VOM TOGETHER STAY TOGETHER" must be some ancient New Zealand folk law.
We made it back to Koh Samui and got a taxi back. The only casualty was a broken camera as it got went when I relieved myself in the sea. Now it sounds pretty crazy but I am just thankful it wasn't as bad as I had researched. No fire ropes, no drug sellers, no spiking of drinks and no injuries. ( Well I say no injuries, I did bruise Isla' leg by picking her up and then falling over on top of her). But all in all we had fun and had our best New Years ever.
