Having left paradise we headed to Can Tho on the Mekong Delta. We had an early start in order to see the sunrise and floating market at it's best. The sunrise was great but the market was a bit of a disappointment, it was basically a few different people on boats selling pineapples!
The next day Jen and Vic headed off to Dalat while Sal ventured off on her own to do a home stay with a Vietnamese family. The journey across the Mekong Delta was lovely, as was the over friendly greeting by the Dad of the family. From the minute I got there I had to just laugh to myself; with turtle and eel on the menu, I knew I was in for a treat! What I thought was going to be an interesting and insightful experience turned out to be a little bit of a disaster! I went there thinking I would chat with the family, learn about their way of life, help prepare and cook dinner and if I was lucky enough, the Dad was known to get out his Mandolin and have a sing-a-long...instead I spent 24 hours on an island on my own with a family who spoke no English (me speaking no Vietnamese!) with no where to wander off to, I ate alone, generally in the dark as there was no electricity and was tucked up in my gecko infested hut with no fan/air conditioning by 8pm! Having said all that, I'm still glad I did it and the food was absolutely gorgeous!
I was more than ready at this point to leave the Mekong and head to Mui Ne on the coast to meet Christie, the girl we'd met on Phu Quoc. I deserved a rest on the beach!!
