So we left Tokyo early on Wednesday morning to get the metro (90 mins) back to the airport, we checked in and then spent the remains of our yen on some brekkie before we got on our flight.
The flight was fine, took about 4 hours Im getting a bit bored of watching the same flims though now I think Ive seen all the ones Cathay pacific are showing so roll on a new airline soon! lol
When we landed we got the bus to causeway bay which took about an hour but only cost 40HK$ (about 2.50), once we got off the bus we had no idea where we were headed as we didnt have a map to our hostel or any directions but we asked a couple of people and one guy was so helpful he phoned up the hostel for us on his mobile phone to see where they were and then led us there! without that i think we may still be wandering around Hong kong now!
Anyway the hostel reception was in a dodgy building on the 6th floor and had no proper signs or anything but they showed us our room which was in the building across the st and so we paid for 4 nights there. The room itself is OK clean at least quite small 2 single beds and an ensuite the size of which i can just turn around in and so you practically have to sit on the toilet to shower! hehe but its all good as its quite a powerful shower which is what you need as it's sooo hot and humid! just when we landed it said the temperature was 30 degrees! so very hot and close! and sweaty when we're carrying our big backpacks!
Anyway we went and got a map and a brochure of HK from the tourist info centre in the metro centre and had a look at where to go, as we were so knackered from getting up early we just wanted an early night so after wandering around causeway bay - our hostel is slap bang in the middle of it! :) We dropped off some laundry to be done by the hostel and then went to bed!
After a very hot night we got up and headed towards Central HK on the metro (66p), Hong Kong is not turning out to be as expensive as i thought it would be! Once in Central we mooched up to the worlds longest escalator (after looking at market stalls and buying some bargainous shorts!). We got the escalator up to Hollywood Rd which is just full of antique/junk shops, so we continued up to Soho, which apparently comes to life at night - not so in the daytime so we just sat and had a drink before carrying on.
We then walked down the hill and to the Peak tram station and we got the tram up the peak. The tram itself was Quite an experience as it goes up the at about a 45degree angle! Once at the top you get immediately led into the peak tower building which is full of shops and restaurants. On the top floor/roof there is the viewing deck which gives a pretty immense view of HK even though it was a bit smoggy - although its been nothing else due to the humidity since we got here. We decided we'd like to stay up there till it went dark to see that view as well so we mooched around the shops and bought our souvenirs and postcards which we wrote and sent and played in the huge EA sports shop on computer games for a while, then we went for dinner at Bubba Gump restaurant which is on the top floor so pretty good views! and everything in the restaurant is related to forrest gump! it was pretty expensive there but we expected that and how often do you get to have a view like that while you're eating!
Once it got dark all the lights on the skyscrapers lit up along the harbour but the clouds also starting engulfing us so the view was a bit hampered by the fact we were stood in the middle of a cloud!
We got the tram back down and headed back to our hostel. We tried to then get on the internet at the hostel but it seems it couldnt open any english websites which is why Im only writing this now. We also picked up our washing and then went back to our room. We had a game of scrabble and cooled off in our Air conditioned room and then went to sleep.
Yesterday we had a bit of a lie in then got up and went by the Star ferry to the Kowloon peninsula. We walked up Nathan Rd which again was hot and full of people, we wandered about and down the 'avenue of stars' which is a promenade, not that we knew one of the 'stars' as they were all oriental film stars - i had heard of bruce lee, jet li and jackie chan!
We got an ice cream and then decided we would go on a harbour boat trip, which was good as it gave us a bit of a breeze and you got to see the length of the harbour and the buildings close up.
Once the boat trip had finished we walked backup Nathan rd to the Temple St market had a look down there - all the stalls sell the same stuff! We then walked down Nathan Rd or what we thought was down after 15 mins we looked at the map and discovered we'd walked even further up it, so we turned round and speed walked all the way back down (about a mile) as we wanted to get back down to the harbour for 8pm as the 'symphony of lights' started then. We made it back down there at about 8.05 so saw most of it. Its a lights show on the skyscrapers and using lasers against music so quite spectacular!
After that we got the boat and metro back and then went to a chinese restaurant thats in the building next to our hostel, it was nice but im not into the paying for a mini dish of raw veg and sauce that i didnt order but oh well thats how things are done here! Anyway we then went back to the room and to bed.
today we got up and have come to the Hong Kong public library so we can get on the internet and email and update our blogs, not sure what we're going to do this afternoon except pack and have an early night as we've got to catch the airport bus at 5.15am tomorrow, so my next update will be from Thailand!
hope everyone is keeping well, love to you all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
