Jen's Travel Diary
Today (Monday) we arrived at 'Wongaling' near 'Mission Beach' after a 3h bus journey from 'Townsville'. Our hostel "Mission Beach Resort Lodge" picked us up from the bus station and we managed to get a queen room for $40 a night between the 3 of us! In the afternoon we had a wander around 'Wongaling' (which is tiny) and I finally managed to find an internet cafe!!!!
Tuesday - Annie and Neeley booked a white-water rafting trip today so they left at 7.45am for 'Tully'. Left to my own devices I decided to explore 'Mission Beach Central'. I took the hostel bus to the village green in the towncentre at 10.30. From there I decided to take the "Cutten Brothers walk" which took me near to 'Narragon Beach'. I walked past the visitor centre and the lookout, through mangroves and lowland rainforest. From there I walked back to 'Mission Beach Central' along the stunningly flat and tropical palm tree fringed beach (although dark rain clouds were in the sky), with "Dunk Island" in the distance. Stopping off for a smoothie at a nearby cafe I got talking to a local lady who was telling me all about the area years ago and how 'Mission Beach' is now a place of holiday homes and not so many local people. Finally I continued along the beach until I reached 'Wongaling Beach' and my hostel. We just chilled out in the evening.
Wednesday - Today we decided to go to 'Dunk Island'. So we all got the curtosy bus at 9.45am to the ferry which sailed from 'South Mission Beach' to the island at 10.30am. I did not enjoy the 40mins crossing as parts of the journey were really rough and the boat kept tipping to one side and then the other - very unstable! Before we got to 'Dunk Island' we passed "Purtaboi Island', a little sand island that is an important seabird nesting site. When we arrived at 'Dunk Island' we wanted to do the "full circle" walk but due to time restrictions this was not going to be possible. Neeley and I then decided to do the "Mount Kootaloo" walk (271m and a trek of 5.6km uphill). It was a tough uphill walk through the humid, dense rainforest, but once we reached the top the view was stunning. Due to the sunny day we had you could see all the way back to the mainland, the group of "family islands" and also the changing colours of the sea. Annie just wandered round the base of the mountain near the beaches. We then all met up and took the 4pm ferry back to the mainland.
Tomorrow we get the Greyhound at 10.45am to Cairns.
