Jen's Travel Diary
Thursday - We drove from 'Queenstown' to 'Twizel' in the centre of the South Island today as it is a good base to visit 'Mount Cook'. We first drove up to "The Remarkables" ski area and got a stunning view back over 'Queenstown'; the lake, snowtopped mountains and hills. Then we drove to 'Glenorchy', round "Lake Watatipu", which was a quaint little "Goldrush" town situated on the lake. From there we then drove through 'Arrowtown' which was also a "Goldrush" town, but it also had several locations where LOTR was filmed. It had a quaint little mainstreet full of old wooden buildings. We walked around the town visiting; the goal (prison), church, Chinese Village and the "Arrow River" (where LOTR scenes were shot). From there we took the windy steep road to 'Twizel' and passed the "Kawarau Bridge" on the way - where people do a 43M bungy jump! We reached our hostel in 'Twizel', it is really nice with good amenities and a nice owner. In the evening we got fish and chips, then went to the local pub (8pm til 3am) and had a really good night meeting lots of local New Zealanders and chatting to the Barmy Army Lions supporters that were also there!
