Jen's Travel Diary
Well we arrived in Bali today. It is really hot and sunny here, 32 degrees. Found a really nice bungalow, "Kedins Inn" on in Kuta beach area - the main strip on the beach. The money is so mad here, I got out a million earlier (Rupea though, not pounds!!!!) We spent the afternoon lying on the beach, and watching the sunset on the water. Off out tonight to discover the nightlife.
We have spent the last week really just lying on the beach and chilling out, we are both quite brown now. I have been having surf lessons with Hamza, one of the beach guys, teaching me (I payed 20,000 Rupea - 2 quid - for two two hour lessons with instructor!!). Have managed to stand up and ride across the waves.
There is one thing that is annoying here on the beach and that is; there are always people trying to sell you stuff (like every 5 seconds) - jewellery, tattoos, pineapple, watches or sunglasses
In the evenings we have been out to "Paddys Bar" (a good cross-section bar with so many types of music), "Tubes" (to shoot some pool with my surfing instructor Hamza and his mates), "The Reggae Bar" (which is so good, its so lively!) and "Bounty Club" (which has regular Hip Hop and Alternative nights). The drinks are not all that cheap here as it is a major holiday destination for Australians.
On Saturday we did leave the beach to go inland and see some more of the island. We payed Hamza and his friend Johan to take us to "Ubud" and "Tanah Lot". It was a really great day! Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali, it had many old Hindu temples and a monkey sanctuary. We walked around for a bit and then grabbed some lunch in a tiny cafe on a side street. You get a dish of rice and then can choose whatever you want with it, it came to 50,000 Rupea for all fo us (3 quid!!). We then encountered a huge rainstorm on the drive to "Tanah Lot", but by the time we got there it had dried out a bit. At "Tanah Lot" is a Hindu shrine and temple, the temple is set on an island that you can only reach when the tide is out. Hanza, Annie and I paddled out and got blessed by the priest working there - you got a flower in your hair and had to drink some interesting water!
I really enjoyed Bali and would certainly go back for a holiday. I am slightly sad at the moment as leaving Bali meant the end of our Asian adventure. As today (7th March) we fly to Australia.
