Back to Katherine again where there are several natural attractions and the area is the crossroads of the outback.
We particularly wanted to see Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. The park consists of a string of 13 gorges along the Katherine River which have been carved out by the summer monsoon rains over millions of years.
The best way to see the gorges is by canoe, so they say. A bit adventurous for us as probably not a pretty sight to see us trying to get in and out of one. We decided to take our now customary boat trip. The cruise consisted of two gorges and we had to change boats to go to the main Katherine Gorge. Plenty of exercise again as we had to walk along rocks up to the next level.
The cruise was hosted by the tradional landowners (as we now call them) even though our guide was Spanish!? Time for more Aboriginal Culture and dreamtime stories together with rock art galleries. Cruising along in peace and tranquility with sandy beaches, unusual rock formations, paperback trees and pandanus palms growing from every available crevice is unbelievably satisfying.
Not really looking forward the next leg of the journey as we face hundreds of miles of less than nothing again, We are unable to get any radio reception in our vehicle and the only cd we have is Neil Diamond which we bought cheap in a roadhouse. Let's hope our love is not on the rocks by end of the journey.
