Christchurch is described as being the most English of NZ cities because of the Anglican Cathedral and punts gliding down the Avon River - not a sight we saw but that might be something to do with it being winter. The Avon River was a bit of a disappointment as certainly wasn't a mighty river.

The city had the normal trams, city bus tours and botanical gardens but did not seem to be an exciting city. After a tour around the coastal suburbs of Lyttleton and Sumner with the houses tiered on the mountainside down towards the sea, we decided that Christchurch was only worthy of one night's stay and we would be on our way.
