We left Ovalau two days ago at five o'clock in the morning in order to get back to the mainland in time to meet the Feejee Experience bus in one of the towns en route so that we didn't have to get all the way back to Suva. Despite this early rise we did nearly manage to miss the bus as we had to get a taxi to the next town and back in order to get some cash out and our bus drove past us on the way! We made it in the end and after a quick shop to buy some stationary for a local school we were on our way again.
Our first stop was at a 'traditional' Fijian village where we sampled yet more kava, which gave us a chance to show off with the few words of Fijian that we had learned from Tamara. Then it was off to the local school where we were shown by the headmistress into some of the classes, where the children sang to us and tried to get into as many photographs as possible. Unfortunately we didn't get to spend very long at the school and once we had handed over the stationary that we had brought we were on the move again.
Our next stop was at a river to go Billi Billi rafting in the rain, which was great fun despite the fact that it was warmer in the water than on the raft! After a while our guide abandoned us and left us in charge, which proved interesting to say the least as steering wasn't as easy as they had made it look. At one point we managed to get stuck in a deep part of the river that the bamboo stick couldn't reach the bottom of which meant we had to get into the water and swim to turn the raft around!
Our final destination for the day was Nanau-I-Ra, an island just forty-five minutes north of the mainland. The only accommodation on the island is the hostel that we are staying at so there are very few people on the island and yesterday morning we went for a bit of an explore to see what was about. After just a ten minute walk around the corner we found ourselves a lovely stretch of beach with nobody else around, which is where we spent most of the day soaking up some sun. Last night another bus load of people arrived from the Feejee Experience, along with T, our guide from a few days before. After a few drinks we spent the rest of the night drinking kava with her, Pops the driver and a few others before heading down to the beach to sit by the fire, only the wood was so damp that even after soaking it in petrol nobody could get it to light.
This morning was a struggle for everyone to make it up in time to get the boat back to the mainland, but we have all made it and in just a few minutes we will be boarding to start the final leg of our tour.
