From Albany we travelled onto Augusta, with a pit stop in a place called Pemberton. We had been recommended Pemberton from our travel agent in Maroochydore for one reason - the Gloucester Tree.
In the national park the Pemberton tree is 64 metres tall but has iron prods stuck out of the side all the way to the tippy top, which you climb up with NO supervision, ropes, harnesses etc. Climb at your own risk. We both climbed straight up so we couldnt pull out, could not look down incase we froze. Made it to the top (after some scary vertical climbs, not all of it was spiralled) and the view was right over the trees. Very scary while climbing the very top as it was windy and the tip of the tree was swaying......do not look down. Amazing feeling at the top. Stayed at The Manor in Augusta which is another YHA, lovely building, great kitchen but very quiet town. Had a lovely arvo drink on the lawn at the local and an early night for our final day of holidays tomorrow
