Around the World Forever
The full day boat tour of Inle Lake was one of the highlights of my trip here. I loved observing their lifestyle centered on boats and being around the water.
For the 100,000 or so inhabitants along the shores of Inle Lake, it appears they have mastered the ability to live on, and off the water's bounty. For generations, they have found a way to maintain floating gardens that grow tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, beans, cauliflower, cucumbers, and peas year round. Obviously a limitless supply of water means never facing a drought. And their huge houses on stilts are simply amazing. They're made of bamboo and probably have a limited lifespan, but in terms of an impoverished country, these homes are mansions. Transportation is provided by teakwood boats with long tail propeller shafts; necessary due to the lake's average water depth of only about 7 feet (2 meters).
The Intha fishermen have also developed a unique way to propel themselves around on their boats and fish the shallow waters.
And with that, I'll just let the photos give you the grand tour.
