We knew this was going to be a challenging day, we were going to the Khmer Rouge prison (SO21) and Cheung Ek (the killing fields).
The tour started off nicely, with a visit to the National Museum, where they had loads of sculptures from Angkor Wat, and the Royal Palace, where we saw the King's monkey wandering around like he owned the place!
After a lovely lunch, it was time for the horrors. Suol Teng (SO21), the former school used by the genocidal Khmer Rouge maniacs as a prison, where records suggest 16,000 people passed through, and were interrogated, tortured, and ultimately murdered. Walking around and looking at the exhibits and pictures, and reading the testimonials, you feel appalled, angry, incredulous, how could this have happened? It was a incredibly grim experience, on many levels. Not least, because some of the Khmer Rouge officials are currently on trial for their part in the genocide of the 70's, and look likely to escape justice.
Next stop was Cheung Ek, a memorial park on the site of one of the former 'killing fields', where the Khmer Rouge executed and buried many thousands of their victims. Unremittingly grim, and once again, it's unfathomable how and why this happened.
After all this grimness, we didn't feel like going out for tea, so we raided the minibar, and had a pringles and dairy crunch-based feast, and watched the latest news from Japan on BBC World.
