*Warning - This blog entry is entirely about Argentine Football*
There was a huge football match played in Buenos Aires the day we flew in from Salta. The most successful Argentinian club, River Plate, were relegated to the second division, for the first time in their 110 year history. The league is set up so big clubs can't get relegated, but River Plate have apparently been so bad, for so long, they've achieved the unachievable! River going down is a bigger deal than if Liverpool, Man Utd, or Arsenal got relegated, and their fans reacted badly. Before the end of the match, the rioting began, they wrecked the stadium, set cars on fire in the surrounding area, and generally went mental.
We thought the guy who picked us up from the airport must have been a River Plate fan, 'cos he was as miserable as sin, but then we remembered we were back in Buenos Aires, they're ALL like that! We discussed the result with the reception staff at our hotel, and they advised us not to mention it, in case we inadvertently upset any River fans!
