G'day Guys, Thanks for the postcard from Ha Long Bay. I imagine Janet was forever trying to hold back Pete from climbing all of the karsts! Not much happening with me lately. Still waiting to hear any good news from Oman. Bought myself an underwater scooter just over a week ago and having a ball with it. I can adjust the bouyancy on it so that it can float for snorkelling, so next time you're over, we can splash around with it. Janet - I'd try to avoid the urge of buying a Harley Davidson when you get back to England! see ya, Brett

Hi Pete & Janet, great stories!!; they keep me warm in a damp & dismal devon but the bank holiday was a classic, 10 mile walk on dartmoor with my mum, then a 10 mile walk from east prawle to torcross followed by a swim in beautiful sunshine, will try bantham this friday but has been annoyingly flat lately, now definately looking for a longboard as our waves haven't got enough energy, also I've heard that they are easier to paddle out?
Pete, sorry to bring you down to earth with a query about work (I promised not to bother you with such matters and I honoured that pledge until now) but Nick Boulton wants to know when you are back in work? I'm due to finish on 9th July however, Nick wants me to stay on for several weeks so that we have cover for the busy summer months and also so that I can fill you in with all the exciting developments in the time you've been away. So it would be great if you could remember when you are due to starting serving the rambling public of the south hams again and let me know asap. I've said I'll do the extra time if necessary but it depends on county hall of course.
Saw Jim on the weekend, was good to catch up, we're not cycling now in June but may do some alpine climbing in august (he's over there for the birth of his 2nd grandchild), I'm either meeting Dai in lakes in two week time for a long weekend or going to scotland for the whole week (depends on the weather). either way we'll get some rock in, I've really missed it but probaly not as much as you. Buying two new ropes next week, everdry longlife, beautiful.
hope you both well, can't wait to hear your stories
take care love law

Hi, I can't believe you only have 7 weeks left - it's gone so quickly! I love reading your postcards and looking at your photos - I'm not at all envious....(actually, I'm lying!) What's been happening here? Well, we got the planning approval for our extension - the building plans are going out to buliders this week for them to tender - then it's just down to when they can start. Not sure if we're going to have to move out temporarily or not yet - either way, it's going to be a lot of mess and upheaval - still, it'll be worth it in the end to get a bigger kitchen, bigger bedroom and an en-suite. This is pretty much taking up our lives at the moment other than the usual work. I've got a girlie weekend away in Barcelona in a couple of weeks - looking forward to getting a bit of sun and warmth as we're not getting too much of that here.... Better go, take care. Love Ness xx

Hi Guys,
been having a great read catching up with what you've been doing, sorry for the delay in any messages, but I have just moved to Brisbane and this is the first time I have had computer access. Loved the story about the motor bike and the hotel lobby, that tickled me :) Will dedicate some time soon to have a full read, when I can take it all in.
All the best Paully
Motorbike Crashes Into Hotel
If you want to get around in Vm you need to ride a motorbike. In Hue we finally decided to hire our own and take a trip to the beach. I was very nervous as i have never riden a motorbike before and they all drive them like maniacs here, but it was a great adventure. Actually it all went really well and i managed to get us out to the beach, do a bit more exploring along a small island and get back to the city. It was all quite a success until i had to park at the hotel. All the millions of motor bikes in every city are always parked up on the pavements. I had to get our bike up a really steep ramp up a very high kerb infront of the hotel. Not sure what happened next but i found the bike accelerating viciously into the hotel lobby! In front what felt like millions of terrified people the bike was stopped by a very high step just before i took out loads of guests eating breakfast in the lobby. It was a little embarassing but hell it makes a good story. We are still laughing a week later.
Favorite Shirt
When you are on the road for a long time every shirt becomes a favorite shirt. When you only have 4 they kind of become special and sentimental. but this shirt was the best. You will have seen it in many photos. it kept me warm treking in the mountains of NZ and cool in the heat of Namibia. Its been hand washed in sinks all over the world and dried on many a balcony. On such a balcony of the 7th floor of a cheap hotel in Hue my shirt blew away. I had fallen asleep and a storm came in in a matter of minutes. i awoke to the blackest sky and a raging wind. I rushed to the balcony to get my washing but found my shirt to have taken to the wind coat hanger and all. I hope it is now being proudly worn by a Vietnamise with an eye for true style in this world.

Ok there J Guy, this is news to me, didn't know anything about a new house, you must be really excited. Best of luck with it and hope all goes well, you are bound to have better luck than our venture into house moving! But tell me more if you can. Great to hear from you. There follows a couple of stories of life on the road in Vietnam. xxxx

G'day guys, thanks for the birthday email. Just got back from South Korea 2 days ago. Had a great time. Saw very few westerners, so I know what you're going through with the instant celebrity thing. While going to zoos, aquariums and national parks, we were constantly swamped with hundreds of school children that were always eager to try out there one word of english "Hello". I've just gone through the video footage I took and that's about all I can hear in the background. Fortunately I learnt to ignore them, or swear at them, so all was good. Birding was alright, lots of magpies and herons, but not much else in the way of wildlife. A few asiatic chipmunks here and there and the odd grey squirrel, but that was it. Also found out about those lovely smells you've been talking about in China, while walking around the cities in South Korea. Hope you're enjoying Vietnam. See ya, Brett.
