My eyes open again and a new day begins. There are numerous sights in Amsterdam like the Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt Museum, Anne Frank's House and the world-class Rijksmuseum and yet simply watching life go by surpasses them all. I spent today much like the last few, dangling my feet over a canal with Raquel and watching the boats sail along. The bikes race by on a nearby street (everyone bikes in Amsterdam) but I'm removed from the high energy flow of normal life. I savor this last day here because I know I won't find this serenity in the bustle of the touristy cities next on my agenda. Amsterdam sets itself apart from the rest as a place I could honestly see myself living in. The days could fade into years and this simple genuine happiness would remain. After a fantastically unproductive afternoon, we decided to try a space cake from the chain of Bulldog coffeeshops that turned into a 4 hour nap back at the hostel. When we eventually woke up, we went to dinner at a Thai restaurant along the amazing street around the corner and then walked to the downtown area. We shuffled through the hoards of pub crawlers but didn't feel much like joining in the craziness and choose to relax in a coffeeshop instead. When it closed down for the night, we sat by a canal once more before finally retiring to the hostel. Four days here felt like a lifetime and flew by at the same time. But if there's one place on my trip so far that I know I'll revisit, it would be Amsterdam. You can't understand it's magic until you experience it for yourself so make it happen!
