5th January we travelled to Phuket for out last destination stop in Thailand. We choose to stay in the town as the main beach joints were too commercial and overpriced. Some of the hotels we visited prior to finding Twin Inn – which was where we eventually ended up staying – were comparable to the Bates Motel (Pschyo). Twin Inn was again perfect for only 12 pound including breakfast. It also had a pool, but only Jay ventured into it during our stay. Our visit here included a visit to a massive shopping mall with a cinema complex, so we went to watch A night at the museum, which we both found quite amusing. The next day we hired a motorbike and went exploring the island via a scenic coastal ride and took in some viewpoints, including the famous Patong Beach, which was extremely westernised. The photos of us with plastic fruit represents our visit to this beach…ermm no beach photos, it was nice but full of sun worshippers and who wants to see photos of topless women????? On Dawns request we also visited the Heroines monument, which was erected to commemorate the memory of two sisters from Phuket who prevented an invasion from Burma in the 1800’s by asking all the girls on the island to dress as men, so the Burmese would think they were soldiers……….and it worked. Later that evening we thought we would take in some culture and dressed up as best we could (given our limited rucksadkdrobe) to visit the theatre “Fantasea’. The show was loosely based on a musical featuring dance, acrobatics, pyrotechnics, magic, illusions and performing animals – at one point there were about 20 performing elephants on the stage. Out last day in Phuket it rained so we visited the Aquarium – which was quite fun, saw some cool fish, a lot better than we expected. We had to buy emergency rain poncho covers on the way home as it was teaming down, so we looked quite a sight, Dawn in a pink one, Jay in a white one, however we made it back to the hotel dry and safe. Ended the day with foot massages and a meal - Dawn had Thai Green Curry and Jay had Phad Thai – our fav dishes of Thailand. By the way Dawn is still detoxing, which is amazing, no alcohol for 10 days.
