Today we were exploring the area of Sossusvlei, known for its amazing sand dunes. To get to see the sunrise from on top of a sand dune we were up at 0430. This was undoubtedly worth it and after a difficult scramble to the top of Dune 45, one of the two dunes that you are permitted to climb, we sat to watch the sun come up amongst the other dunes. This was pretty spectacular, with the bright red sand as far as we could see. After getting back down to the bottom we had some breakfast before driving to Dead Vlei. This is an area that once was a river and now is basically a clay pit with trees over 800 years old. After here we moved to Sossusvlei the other end of the "river" before heading to our last stop the Sesriem Canyon. This is not quite as big as Fish River Canyon, but small enough that you actually walk into it and explore some of the amazing layers of rock and lime. All in all a big morning, but got some pretty amazing photos! All of this proved too much for me and I ended up with a migrane so skipped lunch for a snooze in the tent. Luckily we had free time all afternoon and feeling better after a few hours we sat in the bar area chatting with the others and the boys sampling local beer varieties.
