Game day again!! Up at 5am to be ready for a 3hour game drive in Chobe National Park. The park covers 10,590 sq km of land and is home to great numbers of hippos, buffalo, elephants and other smaller animals. We all jumped in our open 4WD (very stereotypical of Africa!) trawled the park for animals. As we approached the wetlands we came across some hippos play fighting in the water. They look relatively harmless until they open their mouths! From there we continued driving around and found a herd of water buffalo. These guys really would have to be the ugliest of the big 5. From here and on our way back we were all desperate to see some elephants. We weren't disappointed as we rounded a corner and standing basically on the road was a large adult elephant with calf. As we looked around more and more started appearing, with one even walking up to the 4WD. Our driver called out to make sure we didn't move, this again was another realization that even though though they look harmless, they are wild and unpredictable. Amazing to be so close and some of Jarrod's pictures are great. After the drive was over we headed back to camp for brekkie and then had a quick trip into town for supplies (beer and ice!). The afternoon was our own to relax before heading out on a cruise of the Chobe river. Unfortunately sharing the boat with another tour (who we have all come to dislike!!) we thought this was going to be a waste of time. But again we were proved wrong. Traveling along the river we came close to some hippos splashing around, then as we approached the banks a whole herd of elephants. The boat captain cut the engines and we drives around watching them as the drank and bathed in the river. This was made even more special as we watched the whole herd wash a baby elephant in the river, by surrounding him and pushing him under. Then once clean, he was pushed out of the water and rolled around in the dirt. Pretty funny. As we traveled back we stopped to get up close with a large male elephant, standing on his own island in the middle of the river. And also got close to 3 hippos chopping away on their dinner. Overall the cruise ended up better than it started. We returned to the camp for our last dinner cooked from the truck, enjoyed a couple if drinks and crashed in the tent after a long day!
