Arriving at Sorrento we were amazed at the typography, high rugged cliffs, in many parts there appears man made caves hewn into the rock face. Hotels and buildings perched on the edge with colorful hanging flowers from their balconies.
We venture off to the archeological site of ' Herculaneum' the extraordinary excavation of the old port for Neapolis (Naples). This ancient city was covered in mud caused by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. This in an amazing site of preservation with mosaics and timber clearly visible. It is quiet easy to see the structure of the city with streets and houses well laid out.
We then head back to Sorrento then Amalfi via Positano with our driver 'Dino'. Positano is very beautiful, MRB has been there twice and wants to show JB the 'Sirenuese' hotel. So we book in for the following night for dinner and a sleepover. We move on to Amalfi via a very narrow winding coastal road. Amalfi is a great little town with a stunning Byzantine church, lots of good food and great ceramic shops. Black Pearl is arriving to stay the night in Amalfi, but when we get there we find the sea is too rough to anchor. Therefore, the boat collects us and we head back for Sorrento, not without incident. Half way back the tow rope to the tender snaps. Lachy is forced to dive into the sea to recover the tender, wine spilled and glasses get broken during the recovery process. However, we get back safely to anchor in Sorrento for another night.
