This part of Italy has always been poor and rundown. This seaside town on the beautiful mountain coastline of 'promintorio di Tropea' on the Tyrrhenian sea is a very poor cousin to the other Italian holiday destinations. There are nice beaches but the accommodation is very average.
The hotel set up where we stayed was like a holiday camp. You were presented with a silver wrist band that gave access to the cafeteria style dining room, where everything was included in the price. We decided to skip this (with our silver bracelets intact for breakfast), and went to a family trattoria nearby, for a good local meal. Much more enjoyable!
The next morning we head towards the ferry. It is amazing how big the mountains are in this part of Italy, and we have to drive through many kilometers of long tunnels. After exiting some of the tunnels we find ourselves 100's of meters above sea level.
The ferries to Sicily run every 20 minuets and we only wait 5 minuets from our ticket purchase to driving onto the Ferry.
